The many necks of Avery

Simply making everything proportionately larger did not work for upsizing Avery. Some changes and experimentation have been necessary.

neck version 1 neck version 1

The neck was a major challenge. First I knit the same neckband as called for in my pattern: corrugated ribbing with a standard bind off in the solid colour. It’s too floppy and I’m not 100% pleased with it.

neck version 2 neck version 2

Next experiment was to knit a rolled hem above the corrugated ribbing. The rolled hem mirrors the cuff and hem edgings and seemed like a logical design decision. However, there’s still the floppy factor. Possibly both necklines would work if the neck opening were smaller and used fewer stitches. It might stand up better. What I’m really not liking about these two options is that when the neckband flops forward, you can see the stranding on the wrong side of the fabric.

neck version 3 neck version 3 neck version 3

Short of taking apart some seams, ripping out the upper part of both the front and back and working a smaller neck opening, I thought I would try a third option first. This version folds over and is lined. Both problems are now solved. The neckband no longer flops forward and all you can glimpse of the inside is a tidy view of stocking stitch.

Avery running

I finished it off the other night at our Guild meeting (in time to use it for show and tell). I handed it to Devan to wear the next morning and he was so excited to have a new sweater. He’s such a sweetheart and I’m thrilled that he’s still interested in something his Mama made for him.

I would be interested in the up-sized Avery…. The small one I made for my guy many moons ago is still one of my favorite knitted items!

That turned-out very nicely, and it adds even more charming to your very charming son.

I would love to have the upsized version of Avery. I have knit 2 previously and the recipients have long (and reluctantly) outgrown them. Your persistence with the neck makes all the difference to the finished sweater. Please let me know how to access the upsized version. Thanks
