Construction

This cardigan is worked bottom up, in pieces and seamed. It has modified set-in sleeve with a short sleeve cap. Shoulders are joined using three needle bind off. A decorative detail is worked on the back using intarsia. Stitches are picked up along the front edges and neckline and a rolled, reverse stocking stitch edging is worked.

What's Included

This knitting pattern includes written instructions, a colour chart for intarsia stitch pattern, detailed yardage requirements for each intarsia bobbin/section, instructions for left or right front button placement, a schematic with measurements, and thoughtful details.

Sizes + Finished Measurements

Sizes: A (B, C, D)(E, F, G).
Finished chest circumference: 20 ½ (23 ½, 25 ¾, 29)(30 ½, 31 ½, 33 ¼)” / 52 (59.5, 65.5, 73.5)(77.5, 80, 84.5) cm.
Back length: 10 ¾ (12, 13 ¼, 14)(15, 16, 17)” / 27.5 (30.5, 33.5, 35.5)(38, 40.5, 43) cm.
Sleeve seam length: 6 ½ (7 ½, 8 ½, 10 ½)(11 ½, 12, 13)” / 16.5 (19, 21.5, 26.5)(29, 30.5, 33) cm.
Designed for a roomy fit with 2 ½ (4 ½, 5 ¾, 8)(7 ½, 7 ½, 7 ¼)” / 6.5 (11.5, 14.5, 20.5)(19, 19, 18.5) cm proportional positive ease.

The sizes typically are a generous fit for the following ages: 0-6 mo (6-12 mo, 12-24 mo, 2 yr)(4 yr, 6 yr, 8 yr). The fit is based on garment sizes for a popular children’s clothing brand.

If the child you’re knitting for doesn’t fit into the average size for the age-based category, choose the size approximately 2 ½ (4 ½, 5 ¾, 8)(7 ½, 7 ½, 7 ¼)” / 6.5 (11.5, 14.5, 20.5)(19, 19, 18.5) cm larger than the child’s chest circumference measured under the arms.

Substitution Notes

Choose a fingering weight/4-ply yarn with easy care instructions. Superwash wool and sock yarns (whether wool or cotton blends) will work wonderfully. The self-patterning yarn may be substituted with a solid colour, a variegated yarn or a gradient yarn. Yarn suggested is one of many options.
